Local Anesthesia for Texas Dental Hygienists Part 1 - Pilot only

Course Learning Objectives:

1. Define key terms and concepts related to local anesthetic infiltration anesthesia, including pharmacology, indications, and contraindications specific to dental procedures.

2. Explain the physiological mechanisms of local anesthetic agents and their effects on nerve conduction and describe how these mechanisms contribute to achieving effective anesthesia in dental hygiene practice.

3. Understand proper techniques for administering local anesthetic infiltration, including site selection, needle angulation, and injection depth, ensuring patient safety and comfort during dental procedures.

4. Critically evaluate individualized patient factors to determine the most appropriate local anesthetic infiltration technique, considering factors such as patient medical history, anatomy, and the specific dental procedure being performed.

 

Total CE credit hours awarded:

Part 1: 20 hours online asynchronous didactic instruction

Part 2: 12 hours in-person synchronous lab/clinical component

 

Time to Completion:

Part 1 and Part 2 - Approximately 32 hours

The time to completion is approximated considering asynchronous times will vary from participant to participant.

 

Certificate of Completion:

Part 1 certificate of completion will be awarded once participants have successfully completed and passed all parts of the competency exam with an average score of at least 75% for each individual exam. Certificate will automatically be sent to the email address provided during registration. This certificate generation signals completion of Part 1 as a pre-requisite triggering registration of Part 2  enrollment options. Participants must complete both Part 1 and Part 2 to receive the final "certificate of completion" allowing them to submit an application for "certification to administer local infiltration anesthesia" to be added to their Texas RDH license through the TSBDE.

Participants have 180 days (6 months) to complete this course. The 180 days begins on the date of Part 1 registration. Failure to complete both Parts 1 and 2 within 180 days (6 months) will result in forfeiture of all funds paid to Texas A&M College of Dentistry. Secondary registration, along with associated fees, will be required to complete and obtain the final "certificate of completion".
